It didn’t take long for the Tennessee Titans to officially name Marcus Mariota as the team’s starting quarterback for the 2015-16 season. In fact, it only took a few preseason hours before the Heisman winner had officially earned the spot. Now, he’ll make his pro debut as the unquestioned starter, and face of the franchise, when the Titans square off against the Atlanta Falcons in their preseason opener on Friday night.
The expectations are certainly high for Mariota, who was selected with the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft, but those same expectations should not include a lot of playing time; at least not on Friday night. Mariota, like most of the game’s starters, won’t see more than a few series and, likely, won’t play beyond the first quarter. Still, a pro debut is exciting, especially when that pro debut involves a player who has earned so much preseason praise already.
On the Falcons side of things, Atlanta comes into the matchup under brand-new leadership with first-year head coach Dan Quinn. The former Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator took over this offsesaon with the expectation that he would rebuild the Falcons anemic defensive front. Well, there’s no time like the present to test out that theory.
Kickoff for the preseason opener is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday night and will be broadcast on the NFL Network.
