Brad Guzan took exception to a hard challenge by a Mexican player in the first half. That led to both teams exchanging some shoves and choice words. No punches were thrown, but it did show just how serious this rivalry is.
Mexico began the match with a goal at the 10′ mark and the United States answered back with a goal of their own at the 15′ mark. Mexico were given three yellow cards in the first half.
The teams squared off in a one-game playoff for the right to represent CONCACAF in the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia. The United States won the 2013 Gold Cup while Mexico won the tournament in 2015 which led to this playoff match.
