The St. Louis Rams are, officially, heading west.
The NFL owners announced on Tuesday, after plenty of speculation, that the team was heading back to its Los Angeles roots. According to ESPN, the San Diego Chargers may also be heading to the area as well, but nothing is set in stone yet.
According to reports, the Rams are, right now, heading to Inglewood, California and the Chargers have until January 16, 2017 to agree to lease terms. If the Chargers decline, the Oakland Raiders can link up with the Rams. A Chargers-Raiders partnership would have put the two teams in a stadium in Carson, California.
But, per Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, the Raiders agreed to exit an “exclusive partnership” with the Chargers, opening up the possibility of a Rams-Chargers move to the LA area.
The NFL’s six-owner committee on Los Angeles opportunities had earlier recommended the Chargers-Raiders project, which would build a $1.7 billion stadium in Carson. However, that push didn’t lead to the proposal surpassing the Rams’ relocation bid.
Ultimately owners voted, via secret ballot, 30-2 to send the Rams to the proposed stadium in Inglewood.
The ESPN report added that earlier on Tuesday a Rams-only proposal was denied by the owners, which led to the joint venture of the Rams and Chargers.
