USWNT have qualified for Rio 2016, but they now want the top seed in the tournament. That requires a win in the finals over Canada, a familiar foe that has given USA plenty to talk about in recent years.
No USA-Canada showdown can happen without mentioning 2012, when controversial calls gave USA a late 4-3 victory in the London Olympics. The referee awarded USA an indirect free kick for time wasting, which turned into a Canada handball, which resulted in Abby Wambach tying the match on a penalty kick. Canada hasn’t been to a major tournament final since then, and even if they don’t win today, their mission in Rio will be preventing USWNT from going home with a fourth consecutive gold medal.
Today’s contest airs live on NBC Sports Live Extra at 5:00 p.m. Eastern.
