Barcelona may not be facing the toughest opponent today in Deportivo, but it may be the biggest match of the year for the Catalans. Barcelona have imploded since losing to Real Madrid, and have seen their nine-point La Liga lead disappear. Now both Real and Atletico Madrid are in position to steal the league title, something that seemed unthinkable just one month ago. That’s when Barcelona were in the midst of a 39-game unbeaten run, and now they’ll be without Gerard Pique looking to avoid their fourth straight loss.
Marc Bartra will likely fill in for Pique, the latest Barca defender to see the sidelines. Jeremy Mathieu and Thomas Vermaelen are both out with injuries, something that could contribute to the squad’s recent decline.
The Galicians are dangerously close to relegation, but Deportivo are still likely to stay in the Primera. With five games to play they sit four points above the relegation zone, so another win down the stretch would be massive for the club.
