The favorite at the 2016 Kentucky Oaks has some family pride to live up to.
Rachel’s Valentina, the offspring of 2009 Kentucky Oaks and Preakness Stakes winner Rachel Alexandra, enters this year’s race with high expectations. Although famed trainer Todd A. Pletcher’s filly is coming off a second-place finish in the Grade-1 Ashland Stakes in April, she boasts the lowest odds at 9-to-2.
However, competition for Rachel’s Valentina will come in many forms. Land Over Sea, Doug O’Neill’s horse, comes in at 11-to-2 odds, while Cathryn Sophia stands at 5-to-1, Lewis Bay is at 6-to-1 and Weep No More, the horse that beat Rachel’s Valentina at Ashland, is at 7-to-1.
With five legitimate contenders, and a number of others who could certainly make a run at this thing, we’re in store for a thrilling 142nd running of the Kentucky Oaks.
