Box Score
In a battle between two of the world’s top goalkeepers, a penalty shootout was a fitting result to Saturday’s Euro quarterfinal.
Manuel Neuer and Gianluigi Buffon were the focus after 120 minutes, as Germany and Italy could not break their tie.It was Neuer who proved the victor, as Germany won 6-5 to advance to the semifinals.
After a physical but scoreless first half, the later stages resulted in the best action of the match. Mezut Ozil slid a shot past Buffon for the game’s first goal 65 minutes in, but the lead was not meant to last.
Italy equalized just 12 minutes later, when a Boateng handball call awarded a penalty to Italy. Bonucci converted from the spot, tying the game until after 120 minutes and penalties.
The shootout was a tense one, as the reputation of the keepers forced nerves upon the shooters. Zaza, Ozil, and Pelle all missed their shots for their respective teams, and each goalie made their own save. In the end it was Jonas Hector at the spot, who converted his chance to put Germany through.
They are now one game from the final, and will await the result of Iceland-France to determine their next round opponent.
