Uruguay looks to protect their spotless home record during qualifying when they host Ecuador Thursday night.
Suarez and Uruguay have been untouchable at home, going 5-0-0 and outscoring opponents 14-0. Uruguay beat Venezuela 3-0 in their last home outing, but followed that with a disappointing 2-2 draw at Colombia. That draw put Uruguay behind Brazil in the CONMEBOL standings, and only four points above the qualifying bubble.
Ecuador were the hottest team to start qualifying, and are now blowing up the CONMEBOL picture. Through ten games, Ecuador has qualified for the 2018 World Cup and Argentina has not. There are just five points between Brazil (top of CONMEBOL) and Argentina (sixth), meaning every result for Ecuador is crucial to their place in the standings. They’ve been outstanding on the road in qualifying, taking seven points from five road fixtures.
Edinson Cavani’s status is in doubt with a thigh injury, and Colombia will be without both Antonio Valencia and Jefferson Montero.
