Professional wrestlers John Cena and Nikki Bella are now engaged.
In the past, Cena and Bella have both been in serious relationships with fellow WWE superstars. John Cena previously dated Mickie James, and rumor has it she was transferred from Raw to SmackDown back then because she was so upset about the breakup and didn’t want to work with John Cena anymore.
Meanwhile, Nikki Bella previously dated Dolph Ziggler, who currently performs with Bella and Cena on SmackDown Live. Here’s what you need to know about the relationship between Nikki Bella and Dolph Ziggler.
1. They Started Dating Around 2008
The timeline of the relationship between Nikki Bella and Dolph Ziggler is unclear, but it seems that it started not long after Nikki Bella made her debut on SmackDown.
According to PWPIX, Nikki Bella and Dolph Ziggler began dating sometime in 2008. Nikki Bella made her debut on SmackDown in November 2008. According to E! Online, though, Ziggler and Bella met while they were both at Florida Championship Wrestling.
At this time, John Cena was in a relationship with fellow wrestler Mickie James. He would end up getting married to his high school sweetheart in 2009; they divorced in 2012.
It is believed that the relationship between Dolph Ziggler and Nikki Bella ended sometime around 2010 or 2011.
2. Ziggler Said on ‘Total Divas’ That He Still Has Feelings for Bella
On the E! reality series Total Divas, Dolph Ziggler said that he still has feelings for Nikki Bella.
It was not totally clear at the time how true this was; Total Divas is presented as if it is real, but at the very least, a number of circumstances in the show are very clearly staged for television.
In the scene, Ziggler tells Nikki Bella that he can give her kids and give her a marriage, something that she will never get from John Cena. At the time, John Cena was saying in the show that he did not want to get married or have children.
He then goes in for a kiss, and Nikki recoils. Later on in the show, Nikki Bella tells John Cena about this, and he is pretty upset about it.
In a later interview, Ziggler said he wasn’t concerned about upsetting John Cena.
“After a while, you reach a certain point to where you know what your talent is, you know what you’re capable of, and you have to not care,” he said. “And 10 years ago, Attitude Era guys told me to step on some toes. How am I not doing that right now? You have to not give a damn to stand up for what you want to do and that’s what I’m doing.”
3. Maria Kanellis Says That She Once Danced With Dolph Ziggler at a Party & Nikki Bella Got Jealous
In a 2013 interview, professional wrestler Maria Kanellis recalled a story about Nikki Bella being extremely jealous when Dolph Ziggler was around other girls.
She said that she and Dolph Ziggler were very close friends, and Nikki Bella once got upset when she and Ziggler danced at a party.
“Me and Dolph Ziggler were very close friends,” she said, according to Bleacher Report. “We have been for a long time before the twins ever arrived and one time I was dancing with Dolph at a party we were at, at a Green Iguana place or something. So we were all hanging out, having fun and dancing. I was dancing with him. I was dancing with the girls. I was dancing with the other people that were there. So all of a sudden when I’m dancing with Dolph I get a tap on the shoulder and it’s Nikki Bella going, ‘what are you doing?’ And I said, ‘uh, dancing with my friend?’ And she’s like, ‘oh, he’s with me.’ I said ‘okaaaay, sure.’
4. Dolph Ziggler Dated Comedian Amy Schumer
Outside of Nikki Bella, Dolph Ziggler has also dated comedian Amy Schumer.
In 2012, Amy Schumer said on the Howard Stern Show that their sex was way too athletic.
“Always. [But] the first time, I was like, ‘Oh, this is cool. Nobody’s ever ragdolled me,'” she said, according to The Huffington Post. “He was spinning me like a Globetrotter.
5. He Has Not Yet Reacted to John Cena & Nikki Bella’s Engagement
A lot of WWE superstars have taken to Twitter to congratulate John Cena and Nikki Bella on their engagement.
However, Dolph Ziggler has not yet made any public statement about this. Then again, he also hasn’t said anything about The Undertaker’s retirement, even as most other WWE superstars took to Twitter last night to use the hashtag #ThankYouTaker.
Ziggler has, however, congratulated Naomi on winning the SmackDown Women’s Championship, and James Ellsworth for getting his own WrestleMania moment.
