Money in the Bank 2017 is now just hours away. This is the eighth event in the Money in the Bank series, although it will be the 12th year that a Money in the Bank ladder match takes place. Of course, the winner of the ladder match gets a contract which they can cash in any time in the next year in order to get a title match. So with over a decade of Money in the Bank winners, what are some of the records that have been set? What’s the longest time that anyone has held the contract?
The longest time that anyone has held a Money in the Bank contract is 280 days. Funnily enough, this was after the very first Money in the Bank ladder match ever. At WrestleMania 21 in 2005, Edge won the Money in the Bank ladder match, defeating Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, Shelton Benjamin, Kane and Christian. The match took place on April 3rd, 2005, and Edge did not cash the contract in until New Year’s Revolution on January 8th, 2006. Edge cashed in to defeat John Cena.
The next largest gap between Money in the Bank win and eventual cash-in belongs to Seth Rollins, who held the contract for 273 days. Rollins won at Money in the Bank on June 29th, 2014, and he finally cashed in at WrestleMania 31 on March 29th, 2015.
After Seth Rollins, the third largest gap between ladder match and cash-in belongs to Dolph Ziggler, who held his contract for 267 days. He won the briefcase on July 15th, 2012, and he did not cash in until April 8th, 2013, defeating Alberto Del Rio on an episode of Monday Night Raw. However, Ziggler did attempt to cash in a few times before that, being repeatedly thwarted. He also had to defend the contract twice.
There’s a pretty dramatic drop-off between the third and fourth longest contract reign, as number four on the list belongs to Sheamus, who held on to the title for 181 days. He won on June 14th, 2015, and cashed in at Survivor Series on November 22nd, 2015. However, he unsuccessfully cashed in a few times before that.
No one has ever held the contract for between 200 and 267 days, and no one has ever held it for longer than 280 days.
Another interesting record related to Money in the Bank is that only one person has ever won the Money in the Bank ladder match twice: CM Punk, who won in 2008 and again in 2009. This Sunday, Dolph Ziggler has the opportunity to become the second person to win the Money in the Bank contract two times. No one else in the ladder match this Sunday has won before, and in fact, three of them have never even been in a ladder match before: Baron Corbin, AJ Styles, and Shinsuke Nakamura. On the other hand, Dolph Ziggler, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn have been in at least one previous ladder match.
Money in the Bank 2017 airs on June 18th on the WWE Network.
