Kemar Lawrence stunned Mexico with a late free kick to send the Reggae Boyz to their second consecutive Gold Cup final.
For the second time at this year’s Gold Cup, Mexico and Jamaica played a tense, defensive match. The star was Jamaica keeper Andre Blake, who has been the sole reason Jamaica advanced this far. The Philadelphia Union keeper made big saves early as Mexico flooded the attacking third, but El Tri were unable to convert. Mexico dominated the first half, controlling almost 70 percent of possession.
In the later moments, the match opened up significantly for Jamaica. They were able to work the counter, and scored a free kick opportunity in the 88th minute. That’s when Lawrence curled a beautiful shot around the wall and past Corona, who didn’t even dive for the superb attempt.
The Americans defeated rivals Costa Rica in the semifinal, relying on their veterans in a 2-0 victory. USMNT has looked much more dangerous since bringing their veterans back into the roster, as Clint Dempsey has been crucial in attack since being added after the group stage. Tim Howard is key in goal, but he’ll be the second-best keeper in the final. Jamaica’s Andre Blake has been scorching in this tournament, and he’ll be the biggest obstacle for the Americans to overcome on Wednesday.
