Several notable veterans were omitted on the United States initial Gold Cup roster. Now that the U.S. has made the knockout stages, several key players have been added to the roster.
Tim Howard, Clint Dempsey, Michael Bradley, Jozy Altidore, Darlington Nagbe and Jesse Gonzalez were all added to the United States roster as the quarter-finals kick off. Bruce Arena opted to fill the initial squad with youth to get a closer look at the less experienced U.S. players.
“We have added some experienced players to the roster that can help us in the Knockout Round of the Gold Cup,” Arena told U.S. Soccer. “The players leaving all made a good impression, and I’m optimistic for their future with the National Team program.”
To make room for the new players, Dom Dwyer, Kelyn Rowe, Cristian Roldan, Alejandro Bedoya, Sean Johnson and Brad Guzan are no longer on the tournament roster. After winning Group B, the United States takes on El Salvador in a quarter-final matchup. If the U.S. is victorious, the USMNT would take on the winner of the Costa Rica and Panama match.
