WWE Great Balls of Fire 2017: The Results & Highlights You Need to Know


Never mind the silly title for this new WWE PPV.

Judging by the match card, it looks like it might be the one of the best wrestling events of 2017. The main event looks to be the most hardcore, drag out brawl fans have been increasingly hyped about – WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar vs. Samoa Joe. The buildup has turned out to be better than expected and now it’s time for them to prove who’s truly the unstoppable beast. Plus, Braun Strowman has made it clear that he’s not finished with Roman Reigns just yet. They’ll be going head to head in an Ambulance Match. Also on the card is a 30-Minute Iron Man Match for the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship, Seth Rollins vs. Bray Wyatt and a host of other title matches.

Neville (c) vs. Akira Tozawa (with Titus O’Neil and Apollo Crews) (WWE Cruiserweight Championship)

Winner: And still the WWE Cruiserweight Champion, Neville!

Highlights: Tozawa got the crowd to get hype alongside him before getting extra rough with the champ. A feeling out period ensued between both men resulted in flips and arm drags. Tozawa laid out Neville with a nasty chest kick and a Senton Splash afterwards, then a side kick to Neville on the ring apron. Tozawa went full speed ahead for a plancha attempt but Neville kicked him off course. Afterwards, Neville began dishing out some punishing strikes. Neville sent Tozawa to the outside at one point and threw him into the barricade. Neville took him back into the ring later on to dish out more pain to the title challenger. Neville chose to taunt Tozawa, which made him respond with rapid fire cops and a nice jab. Tozawa finally woke up and began laying in most of his signature moves. Neville crawled out of the ring to avoid a top rope move from Tozawa, but Tozawa countered that by planting two dives through the middle rope at him.

The match continued as Neville caught Tozawa jumping from the rope. Tozawa ended up locking Neville into an Octopus Hold for a few moments before it was broken. Tozawa looked for a big move off the tope rope, but Neville dodged him then caught him with an elbow strike and chest kicks soon after. Neville finished that offensive string off with a dropkick to to Tozawa’s chest. Neville made sure to land another elbow strike to Tozawa in the corner and look to land a Phoenix Splash, but he missed. Tozawa almost rolled him up for the win, but Neville kicked out. Tozawa pulled off a Shining Wizard and then planted Neville with a top rope Senton Splash, but Neville escaped to the outside. Back in the ring, Neville kicked the top rope underneath Tozawa right into his groin and then kicked him once more in the gut for the win.


Cesaro and Sheamus (c) vs. The Hardy Boyz (Jeff Hardy and Matt Hardy) (30-Minute Iron Man Match for the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship)

Winners: And still the WWE Raw Tag Team Champions, Cesaro and Sheamus!

Highlights: The first winning pinfall came quickly after Sheamus laid out Matt with a Brogue Kick due to a distraction from Cesaro. Jeff ran in afterwards and took down both men with a Double Dropkick. Once Sheamus left the ring, Jeff began working over Cesaro. Cesaro shook him off after eating some offense and tagged in Sheamus. Jeff managed to beat Sheamus right into his tag corner, which led to a healed Matt tagging into the ring. Matt chose to slam Sheamus’ head repeatedly into the ring apron on the outside to the wonderful sound of “DELETE!” chants. Matt got Sheamus back into the ring, landed a big move and then pulled off a tag team maneuver with Jeff on the big Irishman. Jeff stayed on top of Sheamus with some offense for a while, but Sheamus finally got him off by launching him to the outside. Cesaro took the opportunity to shove down Jeff, but Matt rushed over to Cesaro to begin beating him down. Cesaro used a big elbow strike to force Matt down to the ground.

Back inside the ring, Cesaro and Sheamus took the time to punish Jeff. Jeff tried to tag in Matt after escaping the grasp of Sheamus at one point, but it was all for naught. Sheamus planted Jeff with a Powerslam and then pulled off a tag team move on him with Cesaro in tow. Cesaro used a Big Boot cheap shit to blast Matt off the ring apron and prevent Jeff from tagging in Matt. This led into them getting another winning pinfall after planting Jeff with another tag team maneuver. When Jeff finally came to, he moved out of the way of Sheamus and forced him to fling himself right into the ring post. Once Matt got the hot tag, he slammed Cesaro’s head into the ring padding several times and followed that up with a Clothesline/Bulldog combination. Matt stayed all over Cesaro with his comeback offense, then helped take him down Cesaro after a Poetry in Motion. The Hardy Boyz scored their first pinfall after a Side Effect/Twist of Fate combination.

The match continued as Jeff put Cesaro down with a Gordbuster. Cesaro crawled away in time to bring Sheamus in, who ended up getting kicked right in the mouth by Jeff more than once. Jeff then tagged in Matt to help him continue weakening Sheamus. That plan worked as Sheamus ended up the receiving end of a Double Suplex. When Sheamus and Cesaro ended up on the outside, Matt catapulted Jeff to the outside right on top of them. Matt focused his attention on Sheamus for a while before Cesaro forced Matt right into the ring post. Matt was laid out long enough to give the rival team a countout win, which gave them the 3-1 advantage. Matt climbed back into the ring and was met with a knee strike from Sheamus. Cesaro then got tagged in to continue beating Matt into nothingness. Both men went right back to assaulting Matt as the clock kept ticking. Sheamus even took his sweet time as he cracked Matt’s chest with repeated punches. Cesaro then came off the apron with a Double Axe Handle, which was followed up by Matt getting throw into the barricade and cracked with a Running European Elbow. Matt got thrown back into the ring and slammed to the mat with a Double Suplex.

Matt finally woke himself up and took Sheamus down with a surprise Side Effect. Before Matt could tag in Jeff, Cesaro booted Jeff off the ring apron. Matt ended up getting locked into a Cesaro Sharpshooter, which almost gave the rival team another winning point. After some back and forth offense from both teams, The Hardy Boyz scored another win after a unique backslide/leg drop maneuver caught Cesaro. Afterwards, Matt and Jeff went nuts as they tried a bunch of moves as they looked to tie things up. Matt actually planted Sheamus with a Tornado DDT, but it wasn’t enough to keep Sheamus down for a winning pinfall. A struggle on the top rope ensued later, which led to Matt landing a beautiful Moonsault on Sheamus. Matt almost got another pin on Sheamus, but Cesaro stopped that from happening. Matt and Sheamus ended up n the top rope again and this time, a Super Twist of Fate occurred and tied the match up 3-3.

Sheamus took a while to get back onto his feet. When he did, Jeff put him back down and looked to land a Swanton Bomb. Cesaro pulled Sheamus out of the way, but Jeff switched direction and splashed the both of them on the outside. Matt and Jeff got Sheamus back into the ring and squashed him with a top rope tag team maneuver, but Cesaro saved Sheamus once more. Matt almost got pinned after eating an European Elbow from Cesaro, but he kicked out in the nick of time. Cesaro got a blind tag to Sheamus, who ended up eating a Swanton Bomb. Cesaro ran in and quickly snapped up Jeff for another winning pinfall. Jeff did his best to get another pin and almost got it after hitting a Twist of Fate on Cesaro. While he had Cesaro pinned though, the time limit came to a close.

The Miz (c) (with Maryse, Bo Dallas and Curtis Axel) vs. Dean Ambrose (WWE Intercontinental Championship)

Winner: And still the WWE Intercontinental Champion, The Miz!

Highlights: Once the bell rung, Ambrose targeted Bo Dallas to start the proceedings. Ambrose ran back into the ring for a bit to get back at The Miz, but then he chose to beat down a member of Miz’s Entourage once again. Miz took advantage of Ambrose’s distracted state and took him down with his own strikes. Miz stayed on top of Ambrose by planting him with a stiff DDT and more of his continued offense. Miz slowed the pace down while he continuously kicked Ambrose over and over. Miz looked to land a Double Axe Handle off the top rope, but Ambrose caught him and almost finished him with Dirty Deeds. Miz escaped, but he still got dropped with a Spinning Neckbreaker. Ambrose then launched right into his signature comeback maneuvers while Miz’s outside help tried to revive him with cheers. Miz eventually woke back up and dropkicked Ambrose right in the knee. Miz then focused his next slate of moves onto the that knee while Ambrose was strung up in the corner.

Miz ended up running right into a nasty Clothesline at one point. Ambrose tried to follow that up with another Dirty Deeds attempt, but Miz escaped again and soon locked his hurt knee into a Figure Four Leglock. Ambrose lay writhing in pain for a while until he grabbed the bottom rope to escape. Miz then used his repeated chest kicks to further humiliate Ambrose. Miz’s last kick missed though and led into Ambrose getting enough strength to retaliate. Ambrose came off the top rope to ground Miz with an Elbow Drop. Afterwards, Maryse distracted the ref while Curtis Axel and Bo Dallas got their hands on Ambrose. Ambrose fought them all off by launching himself onto all three men on the outside. Back inside the ring, Ambrose almost got his IC Championship back after planting Miz with his Dirty Deeds. But Maryse saved her man by putting his foot on the bottom rope. Madness ensued as Miz’s backup came at Ambrose from every direction. Miz got the help he needed after Bo cracked Ambrose in the back of the head. Miz then finished Ambrose off with his Skull Crushing Finale.


Enzo Amore vs. Big Cass

Winner: Big Cass!

Highlights: Enzo made his entrance and pulled off his usual antics and microphone ish talk. Enzo spoke about his former partnership with Cass and how high they were during their tenure together. Enzo told the crowd that he’s fully prepared to stay strong and become larger than life over his former partner. He ended his big time promo by referring to Cass as “SAWFT.” Cass finally made his entrance with a brand new theme song and tights to commemorate his new solo run. Both men stared each other down for a bit until Enzo ran at Cass with jabs. Cass easily knocked Enzo down though and laid him down with strikes in the corner. Cass punished Enzo with a headlock of some sort before flinging him down to the ground. Cass continued to assault Enzo with slaps and then sent him flying with a Fallaway Slam. Cass splashed Enzo in the corner once, then went for another one. Enzo fell to his feet before Cass could crash into him again, but Cass picked him back up to land more stiff strikes. Cass then launched Enzo in the air with a Gorilla Press Slam and threw him hard onto the outside mat. Enzo slowly pulled himself back into the ring before the ref counted him out. Cass looked amazed at his former friend’s resiliency. But the match came to a close once Cass finished Enzo off with a running Big Boot.


Seth Rollins vs. Bray Wyatt

Winner: Bray Wyatt!

Highlights: Both men engaged in a lock up sequence to kick things off. Rollins managed to get the better of Bray with a stiff kick to the back. Wyatt got the better of the next lock up exchange, which led to Bray creeping out Rollins with his signature taunt. Rollins got tired of Bray’s antics and landed a Baseball Dropkick to him when he left for the outside. Back in the ring though, Bray got his hands on Rollins for a few moments. Rollins fought back and managed to drop Bray face first into the corner ring pad with a Flatliner. Bray was shaken for a bit until he ended up the ring apron with Rollins. Rollins ended up getting thrown face first himself into the steel ring steps. Back inside the ring, Bray maintained control over Rollins for a good while. Both men ended up battling it out on the top rope, which led into Rollins eating a nasty Superplex from Bray. When both men got back to their feet, several blows were exchanged between them. Back on the ring apron, Bray spiked Rollins’ head right into it.

Bray got his arm around Rollins’ throat back in the ring for a few seconds. Bray then tried to land a Running Senton, but Rollins moved out of the way at the last second. Rollins finally used this moment to begin making a comeback against Bray by hitting him with a Suicide Dive the the outside. Rollins then cleaned Bray’s clock with a Springboard Clothesline. Rollins then began pulling off his big signature maneuvers on the challenger for a good while. At one point, Rollins hit an Enzuguri on Bray but Bray responded a with a nasty Lariat. Rollins looked like he was down for the count, but he picked up Bray to land a big Falcon Arrow. Rollins looked to come off the top rope with a match ender, but Bray cut him off with a Jawbreaker. That led into Bray slamming Rollins to the mat with a Uranage. While Rollins crawled off the mat, Bray slapped him and taunted him relentlessly. Rollins responded with tons of punches that forced Bray to the outside. Rollins tried to retrieve him, but Bray countered him with a thumb to the eye. This led into the Sister Abigail finish from Bray.


Alexa Bliss (c) vs. Sasha Banks (WWE Raw Women’s Championship)

Winner: Sasha Banks by countout…

Highlights: At first, Banks got the better of the champ during their numerous lock up’s. Bliss ended up getting dropkicked to the outside at one point and then got sent across the ring with an armdrag shortly thereafter. Bliss’ arm looked to be severely injured, but it turns out she did this to herself to fool Banks. Alexa popped her elbow back into shape and then used it to plant an elbow strike on Banks. Alexa was in control for a bit until Sasha almost locked her into the Banks Statement. Bliss almost made her way to the back and quit the match, but Banks got ahold of her before she could escape. While Banks was standing on the ring apron, Bliss tripped her up and forced her to fall on her back. Once Bliss got back in control, she worked on her back with her signature offense. Bliss remained relentless as she continued to assault Banks’s weakened back.

Banks finally got Bliss away from her by suplexing her hard into the corner. When both ladies got to their feet, Banks launched right into her signature comeback offense. Banks even grounded Bliss with a Back Suplex followed up a running knee strike. Banks looked to be in control for a while before she was caught with an Elbow Strike and a Code Red that almost finished her. Bliss soon went to the top rope to land her Twisted Bliss. She came off the top rope and landed right onto Banks’ knees, which led to Banks locking in the Banks Statement. Bliss looked like she was on the verge of tapping until she forced herself to grab onto the bottom rope. Banks ended up getting pulled to the outside by Bliss, but Banks countered her by shoving her into the barricade. Banks rolled Bliss back into the ring, but Bliss chose to roll out once more. Bliss elbowed Banks when she tried to bring her back in and then chose to get counted out to retain her title. After the ball rang, Banks and Bliss brawled on the main stage. Both women ended up on the announce table, which led to Banks pushing Bliss off to the ground below. Banks then took flight and crushed Bliss with her double knee strike.

Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman (Ambulance Match)

Winner: Braun Strowman!

Highlights: Braun ran right at Reigns with reckless abandon as the soon as the match began. Reins struck him at several points near the start of their brawl, but Strowman overpowered him with a splash into the corner. On the outside, Strowman went on a rampage by throwing his rival all over the outside. Strowman picked up some nearby ring steps and used it future injure Reigns. Reigns dodged a third steel steps strike and forced Strowman to drop his steps. Back inside the ring, Reigns tried his hardest to take the big man off his feet. But Strowman shook off all of Reigns’ offense and responded with a Reverse Chokeslam and a Powerslam soon after. Strowman then chose to pick up Reigns and begin walking him to the ambulance. Reigns hopped off of Strowman and ran back into the the ring. This angered Strowman and caused him hurriedly run into the ring and right into a Samoan Slam. Strowman then slammed himself in the ring post after missing a corner shoulder strike to Reigns. Reigns left the ring to dropkick Strowman’s head into the ring post, then targeted his injured elbow with strikes and chair shots.

Reigns landed more chair shots to a standing Strowman, who took them all without even flinching. Strowman got ahold of Reigns once again and beat him all the way up the ramp. Strowman then sent Reigns flying into the entrance screen and then proceeded to clear off the nearby announce table. Strowman looked like he was about to slam Reigns into the table, but Reigns slipped out of his grasp. Reigns laid in several strikes to the monster, but Strowman shook off all the damage done to him and launched Reigns into the side of the ambulance. Reigns almost got put into the ambulance, but he fought off Strowman by slamming his head into the ambulance door and planting him with a Superman Punch. Strowman tried to keep Reigns away, but Reigns stayed in control after landing another Superman Punch. Reigns was on the verge of winning the match until Strowman pulled out a stretcher and used it to destroy him.

Reigns ended up back on the main stage after Strowman threw him easily on top of it. Strowman tried to follow that up with a Powerslam, but Reigns crawled out of his grasp again and speared him right through the entrance screen. Both men fought hard to get back on their feet while the crowd looked on in disbelief. When Reigns finally got his hands on Strowman, it looked like he just might be able to pull him to the ambulance. Strowman still managed to survive by shoving Reigns to the ground. Strowman tried to get another piece of Reigns, but Reigns laid him out with a shot from the stage light. Reigns then went for a big Spear, but he ran right into the ambulance after Strowman dodged him. Even after Reigns got the victory, Reigns hopped out of the ambulance to finally land his Spear on Strowman. Reigns then forced Strowman into the back of the ambulance, took the driver’s seat and then slammed the back of the vehicle into a truck. Kurt Angle and several personnel came out to save Strowman as Reigns walked off.


Curt Hawkins vs. Heath Slater

Winner: Heath Slater!

Highlights: As everyone in the back tried to save Strowman, Hawkins and Slater entered the arena for an impromptu match. Both men began competing against each other while a firetruck was called in to offer its assistance. While the camera stayed backstage, the bell rung and it was announced that Slater won the match. The firemen used all their tools to break open the ambulance and save Strowman. When they finally got it open, Strowman was almost brought out onto a gurney while Angle and James Gibson looked on. A bloodied Strowman ignored the help of medical personnel and tried to crawl away on his own. Strowman eventually got back to his feet and walked away from the harrowing scene.


Brock Lesnar (c) (with Paul Heyman) vs. Samoa Joe (WWE Universal Championship)

Winner: And still the WWE Universal Champion, Brock Lesnar!

Highlights: During the main event participant introductions concluded, Joe struck down
Lesnar. Joe forced the champ to the outside and even slammed him right into the announce table. While Joe paced around in the ring, Lesnar tried to clear his head and get back in the ring to officially start the match. When Lesnar finally got back to his feet, the bell rang. Joe collided with Lesnar in the corner and followed that up an Enzuguri. Joe and Lesnar then got into a striking/grappling war that Joe ended up winning. Joe tried to muscle Lesnar down, but Lesnar countered him with shoulder strikes in the corner. Joe shook the damage from strikes off and went right back to getting the better of the champ. Lesnar saved himself from Joe by slamming his head into the top ring post, which led right into “Suplex City.” Lesnar delivered numerous German Suplexes to Joe while the crowd roared on. Lesnar went for another one, but Joe low blowed him while the ref was distracted. Joe then locked in the Kokina Clutch on Lesnar while the ref kept a close eye on the champ. Heyman screamed for Lesnar to hold on while Joe gripped Lesnar even tighter in his submission hold. Lesnar escaped by using a Sidewalk Slam on Joe. Lesnar tried to ram Joe into the corner, but he slammed his shoulder right into the ring post. Lesnar recovered pretty quickly and went right back to suplexing the life out of Joe. Joe looked done and almost ate an F5, but Joe slipped off and locked in the Kokina Clutch again! Lesnar almost went to sleep, but then he finished Joe with an F5 out of nowhere!
