Justin Thomas got a little help on his way to winning hes first major golf tournament. Thomas’ birdie putt on the 10th hole at the 99th PGA Championship looked liked it had missed, until it finally dropped in the hole after spending about fifteen seconds on the lip of the cup. The birdie putt put him just one shot behind tournament leader Hideki Matsuyama.
Soon after, Matsuyama would bogey the 11th hole, putting Thomas, Matsuyama, Francesco Molinari, Chris Stroud and Kevin Kinsner in a five-way tie as the players finish up the back-nine.
Just three holes later, Thomas would claim the lead outright when he nailed a chip-shot from the edge of the green on the 13th hole.
Thomas birdied the 17th hole after a terrific tee shot to move to nine-under-par with a two-stroke lead heading into the 18th.
Thomas went on to bogey the 18th hole to put him at eight-under for the tournament.
Thomas started the final-round just two shots behind leader Kevin Kisner. Thomas began the day at five-under-par, before shooting one-under-par on the front nine. His birdie on the 10th hole and chip shot on the 13th gave him a two-shot lead.
Thomas win at the PGA Championship is his major win on the PGA Tour. Earlier this year, Thomas entered the final round of the U.S. Open just a stroke off the lead, behind Brooks Koepka. Thomas bogeyed three of his first five holes, and Koepka birdied his first two, putting Thomas six shots back early in the final round.
Thomas has now won four times on the PGA Tour this season and five times in his career. He shot 59 in Hawaii in January and had a 63 in a round at the U.S. Open.
Francesco Molinari, Patrick Reed and Louis Oosthuizen finished in a tie for second.
