In a matchup of two of the NFL’s better quarterbacks right now, Philip Rivers leads the Los Angeles Chargers (5-2) into CenturyLink Field to take on Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks (4-3) as Week 9 action continues on Sunday afternoon.
The game is scheduled to start at 4:05 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on CBS in select areas (coverage map here). After dropping the first games of the season on the road, the Seahawks have since rebounded with four wins in their past five games. Wilson is playing at a hair-below MVP level, although he — and a rejuvenated running game — have been the keys to Seattle’s success.
The Seahawks front office selected running back Rashad Penny in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, but 2017 seventh-round pick Chris Carson has proven too good to ignore. Carson has received the bulk of the work in the backfield this season, accumulating 457 yards on 4.4 yards per carry, breaking 100 yards in three of Seattle’s past four games. Carson is questionable with a hip injury for Sunday, but is closer to a game-time decision.
Rivers is also playing like a candidate for MVP, but with players like Brady, Mahomes and Brees in the mix, it is hard to breakthrough. Still, the 36-year old is enjoying one of his finest, most under-the-radar seasons of his career. A major part of Rivers’ success is the reliance on the rushing attack. Running back Melvin Gordon (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Week 9, but is reportedly expected to play.
Los Angeles has won four consecutive games heading into Sunday, despite not having All-Pro defensive end Joey Bosa (foot) in the lineup. Bosa’s timetable keeps getting pushed back, wbut an easier slate (Denver twice, Oakland, Arizona) by strength of schedule should keep LA afloat entering December.
