Chiefs Add Former Super Bowl Rival to Backfield: Report

Ronald Jones

Getty Bucs running back Ronald Jones is not expected to play against the Eagles.

The Kansas City Chiefs have added some depth to their offensive backfield, signing running back Ronald Jones, according to Matt Verderame of FanSided. The deal is for one year and $5 million, per NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero.

Jones was a second-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2018 NFL Draft. In 55 games played in his NFL career, he has accumulated 2,174 yards on 488 rushing attempts — 4.5 yards per carry — and 18 rushing touchdowns, per Pro Football Reference. He’s also caught 75 passes for 571 yards and another score.

Chiefs Kingdom might remember Jones from being on Tampa Bay’s Super Bowl roster when the Buccaneers beat Kansas City in the 2020 Super Bowl. In that game, he had 12 rushes for 61 yards.

Standing at 5-foot-11, 205 pounds, Jones runs with a lot of power, which is evident in the above tweet. However, the weakest facet of his game is his pass-blocking. Last season, he earned a 12.4 pass-blocking grade from PFF. Granted — he was only on the field for 12 total pass-blocking snaps. But the low grade combined with the fact that the Buccaneers seldom used him in those situations speaks volumes about his struggles in that category.

KC’s RB Room Taking Form

Jones joins a running back room in Kansas City that includes Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Derrick Gore, and Brenden Knox. The two other running backs that were on the roster last season, Darrel Williams and Jerick McKinnon, remain free agents.

Given Jones’ inability to pass block effectively, he will likely be an early-down back for the Chiefs, splitting snaps with Edwards-Helaire and Gore on first and second down.

Twitter Reacts to Chiefs Signing Jones

Twitter users reacted to Jones joining the Chiefs.

“Ronald Jones has always had excellent raw rushing ability. There will be wide open running. lanes for him in 2022,” Russell Clay of Fantasy Guru wrote.

“How can you say the Ronald Jones signing doesn’t effect CEH when he literally got supplanted by Jerrick McKinnon last season,” another user wrote.

“Ronald Jones is a fine player. Good size and the straight line speed is great. Not particularly shifty or doesn’t bring anything out of backfield Hopefully this means Chiefs decide to run more traditional runs like Duo/Power. Otherwise he makes no sense,” another user wrote.

“Always get a kick out of remembering that the biggest braggart in our dynasty league had two top-half firsts in 2018 and took Ronald Jones and Rashaad Penny over Nick Chubb,” another user wrote.

“A backfield of Ronald Jones and CEH is the definition of a backfield you just fade. Rojo is the more explosive runner but can’t catch. CEH is a plodder who only gets outside on swings and screens. They are the most perfect version of a backfield value succubus we have seen,” Dan Fornek of RotoBaller wrote.

“MVS left Aaron Rogers in Green Bay and will be catching passes from Patrick Mahomes. Ronald Jones left Tom Brady in Tampa Bay and will take handoffs from Patrick Mahomes. Everyone wants to play with the best QB in the world. And they’re coming to Kansas City to do it,”: another user wrote.

“The Ronald Jones signing is the Chiefs admitting they missed on the CEH pick,” another user wrote.
