Giants Issued Strong Message from Bills Star QB Josh Allen

Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll is the first known finalist for the New York Giants’ head coaching vacancy, according to Pat Leonard of The New York Daily News. Daboll, 46, has interviewed with the team twice, Leonard wrote on January 24.

Daboll, who has been with Buffalo since 2018, at least has the endorsement of Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

“I think teams would be foolish not to offer Brian Daboll a job,” Allen said January 24 during a press conference. “I’m praying they don’t because I want him back here. But I love him and his family too much to really think that. I think he’s one of the best coaches in the league.”

Daboll Primed to Bring Offense Back to New York?

Over the past four seasons, Allen has blossomed into one of the league’s elite quarterbacks under the coaching of Daboll, who arrived in Buffalo in 2018, the same year Allen was drafted.

In 2021, Daboll watched Allen, 25, perform like an MVP candidate, passing and rushing for 42 total touchdowns and 5,170 yards from scrimmage. Under Daboll, the Bills offense proved to be one of football’s most vaunted, ranking fifth in total offense and averaging 381.9 yards per game. Buffalo also finished within the top three of scoring offenses for the second consecutive season, putting up 28.4 points per game in 2021. Meanwhile, the Giants finished second-to-last in scoring offense in each of the past two seasons and haven’t ranked in the top 10 since 2015, when they finished sixth in the league.

Allen Advocates for Ken Dorsey, Who Is Also Linked to the Giants

Should Daboll ultimately move on and take the Giants head coaching job, Allen has voiced support for Bills quarterback coach Ken Dorsey to take the reins as Buffalo’s offensive coordinator.

“I think every QB would love to be a part of that process, and I do know there’s a guy in this building that I’m a huge advocate for [in Dorsey],” Allen said during the January 24 press conference. “Again, it’s not my job. It’s not my decision to make.”

Dorsey, 40, has history in the NFL as both quarterback and coach. A former national champion at the University of Miami, Dorsey was a seventh-round selection of the San Francisco 49ers in 2003. He went on to play three seasons in San Francisco before closing out his NFL career in 2008 with the Cleveland Browns. Dorsey wrapped up his playing career in 2011 after one season with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian football League.

Dorsey’s coaching career began in 2013 as quarterback coach for the Carolina Panthers, where he previously was a scout. He stayed there until 2017 and oversaw quarterback Cam Newton’s 2015 MVP season.

In a January 25 Sports Illustrated piece, Patricia Traina speculated that Dorsey could follow Daboll to the Giants if Daboll were hired. On January 21, the Giants hired Joe Schoen to be their next general manager. Schoen had served as Bills assistant general manager since 2017.
