The Pittsburgh Steelers are mourning the tragic death of one of their own as quarterback Dwayne Haskins was struck and killed by a dump truck in South Florida on Saturday, April 9.
Haskins’ agent Cedric Saunders confirmed his death to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Haskins was training with other Steelers quarterbacks, wide receivers and running backs at the behest of quarterback Mitch Trubisky. He was less than a month away from his 25th birthday.
According to the Miami Herald, the Florida Highway Patrol investigated the “fatal vehicle vs pedestrian crash” that happened around 6:30 a.m. on I-595 Westbound between Interstate 95 north and south.
The Florida Highway Patrol stated in an accident report obtained by the Associated Press that Haskins was attempting to cross the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 when he was “hit by a dump truck while walking on a South Florida highway.” Haskins was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said that it’s unclear why Haskins was walking on the highway.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin released the following statement:
I am devasted and at a loss for words with the unfortunate passing of Dwayne Haskins. He quickly became part of our Steelers family upon his arrival in Pittsburgh and was one of our hardest workers, both on the field and in our community. Dwayne was a great teammate, but even more so a tremendous friend to so many. I am truly heartbroken.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Kalabrya, and his entire family during this difficult time.
