East Carolina vs Appalachian State Preview

Appalachian State is looking to build on a strong 9-3 season a year ago as they head into the new season against East Carolina.

Chase Brice is a player to watch for the Mountaineers. Brice is taking over the QB position for App State following two seasons backing up Trevor Lawrence at Clemson and then one year at Duke.

“As far as quarterbacks go, just letting it rip, running backs make plays, receivers doing what they do and the tight ends, they are a huge part of our offense,” Brice said. “It has been good getting in the flow of things as far as timing and getting used to this new offense.”

As many teams have, the Mountaineers are trying to educate players on the vaccine both for their personal health and to a breakout that could lead to missed games.

“The vast majority of our players have the vaccine. I won’t get into specific numbers right now,” Appalachian State coach Shawn Clark said. “But I think we’ve done a great job of educating our players. And we’ll follow all the protocols from our university and from the Sun Belt Conference.”

East Carolina is looking to rebound from a 3-6 season but will be a double-digit underdog against Appalachian State — a team that could be in the running to be the best Group of Five school out there. However, East Carolina head coach Mike Houston is just happy to be playing football.

“Game week is finally here. To be honest, with it being a Thursday night kickoff, we’re late in game week. We’re getting ready for what would be our Wednesday afternoon practice. We had a really sharp practice last night. You could tell last night, the kids, they’re excited to play. They just had a different pep in their step. Great energy. Great focus. Really excited about the matchup this Thursday night. Certainly, a great challenge against a very good Appalachian State football team. But we’re excited to get back to playing and we’re excited we’re going to have a bunch of Pirate fans in the stands at Bank of America Stadium. So, looking forward to it.”Houston is looking forward to playing in front of the crowd that will be on hand at the home stadium of the Carolina Panthers.
