BYU vs USF Preview

BYU kicks off its season against South Florida on Saturday.

The Cougars are less than two years removed from an almost-unbeaten regular season in 2020, and the Cougars followed it up with an 11-2 season in 2021. BYU look build on recent success this season, which beings with a No. 25 ranking in the nation. A third-consecutive season with 10 or more wins would be the first stretch of that sort for BYU since the late 2000s.

“This is a big part of why I wanted to be the head coach,” Cougars head coach Kalani Sitake said via The Salt Lake Tribune. “Back when I was hired in December of 2015, this is what I wanted to be a part of. I feel like this will be a good way to test our guys and get us ready for the Power Five level. We knew if we did things right, we would eventually get into a conference. Now we are in a good spot.”

Cougars quarterback Jaren Hall returns to Tampa to face USF where he made his first career start with BYU in 2019.

“It was a special day for me, a lot to remember,” Hall said via KSL.com’s Sean Walker. “But there’s a lot I don’t remember after getting knocked around.

“I feel like there’s a lot I have to accomplish there,” he added.

BYU didn’t win against USF that time around, a 27-23 loss. This year’s USF squad comes off of a 2-10 season, which head coach Jeff Scott wants to see improvement on. The Bulls go into the game as underdogs this time.

“We’re going to have several opportunities this year for kind of those breakthrough moments,” Scott said via Fox 13. “For our program to take that next step.”

For USF, next steps include improved fourth quarter play.

“We’ve had game where we popped out with good energy early on,” Scott said. “We’ve had games where it may be slow at the beginning, but to be able to play for 4 quarters that’s the biggest thing that I’m looking to see out of this team.”
