Dolphins vs Jets Preview

Backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater gets his first start of the season as the Miami Dolphins (3-1) face the New York Jets (2-2) on Sunday.

“When you’re looking for a No. 2 quarterback, there’s two things,” Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said via ESPN’s Marcel Louis-Jacques. “You want him to benefit the starting quarterback while the starting quarterback is the starting quarterback, and empower him with how they approach their daily game plan responsibilities and how they develop when they’re training in the offseason.”

“But you also want a guy that can win games should the starter go down. So, a veteran backup is definitely in our discussions, but it’s the best player that we can find in whatever avenue and move forward from there,” McDaniel added.

The Dolphins lost starting quarterback Tua Tagovailo to significant head and neck injuries last week amid the swirling concussion controversy in the NFL. Bridgewater stepped in to finish the Week 4 game at Cincinnati.

A first-round draft pick turned journeyman, Bridgewater once endured a career-threatening injury himself. He sustained a gruesome knee injury at training camp in 2016 with the Minnesota Vikings.

Bridgewater, who as the Vikings’ starting quarterback at the time, missed almost all of the following two seasons. He made a cameo appearance in a late-season 2017 game where the Vikings had the contest in hand.

His journey then took him around the league to the Jets, New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, and Denver Broncos. He showed flashes of being a quality starter in New Orleans when he filled in for Drew Brees, but Bridgewater didn’t pan out as a full-time starter in Carolina or Denver.

Now, he looks to keep a team with one of the best records in the league afloat for however long Tagovailo will need to sit out. The Dolphins hope to see something similar to Bridgewater’s performance in 2019 when he went 5-0 as a starter for New Orleans in relief of Drew Brees.

Against the Bengals, Bridgewater threw for 193 yards and a touchdown versus an interception in the 27-15 loss. The Jets don’t have the Bengals defense — giving up 25.3 points and 326.5 total yards per game.
