The women’s Olympic biathlon 15K individual race takes place on Monday in Beijing.
The event (4 a.m. ET start time) will be partly televised on USA. Women’s Biathlon 15K 2022 Preview
Sweden’s Hanna Oeberg looks for a second-straight gold medal in the women’s biathlon 15K after winning it PyeongChang in 2018.
It won’t come easy with competition from Dzinara Alimbekava of Belarus and Lisa Theresa Hauser of Austria. Alimbekava competed in 2018 and won gold for the 4×6 km relay. Hauser is competing in her third Olympics.
Oeberg’s sister, Elvira Oeberg, is also competing in the biathlon. Elvira raced with Hanna in the mixed relay race on Feb. 5.
“She [Elvira] has made a huge improvement over these four past years and I’m really impressed by her,” Hanna told the media via Reuters.
“It was special for her to see me four years ago, and now she’s here with me. She really wants to do well here, and we have a really good situation where we can support each other,” Hanna added.
Hanna winning gold would keep Sweden’s momentum going in the medal count. Sweden ranks third with two silver medals.
The U.S. hasn’t ever won a medal in the biathlon. Team USA biathlete and Maine native Clare Egan explained to NPR that it’s like hitting a ball in baseball.
“In baseball,” Egan said according to NPR’s Tom Goldman, “even the very, very best hitters are getting hits three out of 10 times while they’re at bat.”
“We have maybe 30 races over the course of the winter,” Egan added, “but the Olympics are once every four years and just a couple of competitions. So statistically, the likelihood that we might land on the podium on any given day is quite low.”
Egan competed in the Olympics in 2018 as did Colorado native Joanne Reid. Egan finished 13th in the relay, and Reid took 22ndin the 15K. Vermont native Susan Dunklee competed in three previous Olympic games. Dunklee’s best finishes include 7th in the relay and 8th in the mixed relay in 2014 at Sochi.
“And I wasn’t quite ready to give that up yet. So I’m doing another year, and I’m going to see what I can do,” Dunklee said in her bio for Yahoo! News.
Deedra Irwin, a Wisconsin native, is making her Olympic debut.
“So putting on that athlete bib that have the Olympic rings on it, I think for me, is going to be one of those moments where it is going to be like, ‘wow, cool. We’re here,'” Irwin said per Fox 11 News’ Cody Krupp.
“We’re a team that performs very consistently at a very high level,” Egan said per TeamUSA.org’s Peggy Shin.
