Vine Video App Closing: How to Save & Download Your Videos

The struggling Twitter social media company is closing the popular mobile app Vine, but there are ways to save your content.

In a statement, Twitter said Vine – which allowed people to record six-second looping videos and hurtled some people into social media fame – will be “discontinued” in the “coming months.” The company was not more specific as to a time frame.

Twitter also announced October 27 that it was laying off 9 percent of its staff.

What will happen to the Vines you’ve already produced?

Twitter stresses:

Nothing is happening to the apps, website or your Vines today. We value you, your Vines, and are going to do this the right way. You’ll be able to access and download your Vines.

Twitter added, “We’ll be keeping the website online because we think it’s important to still be able to watch all the incredible Vines that have been made. You will be notified before we make any changes to the app or website.”

That sounds vague enough that many people want to make sure they preserve their content now. How do you download Vines?

Use an Online Download Service

There are websites online that will help you download your Vine. You simply put the URL of the Vine into the box on their site and click download. The video should download as an MP4 file onto your computer. You can watch a video tutorial above for the Vine Downloader site.

Some of those sites include:

Vine Downloader

Vine Video Download

KeepVid

Vine Deck

Downloading Your Vine Videos With a Right Click

If you are using Microsoft Explorer, you can simply right-click on any Vine video, and then choose the “Save video as” option and “save the video as an MP4 video file without needing a third-party site or download,” instructs Computer Hope.

Saving Vine videos to your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad

You can download the Videos Downloader for Vine app. It costs 99 cents.

iDownloadblog suggests the following steps at that point: Start the app on your device, and login with your Vine credentials. The site will show you your Vine feed. Choose the “hamburger icon,” and you will see a side panel. To manually look for vines, select “Search,” and, to find vines from people you follow, select “Feed,” says iDownloadblog.

To save vines you have received through private messages, choose “Messages.” Find the Vine you want to save to your device, and tap it. Then tap the green button at the bottom that says: “Add to Downloads,” says the blog. This should download your Vine video, and you should receive notification when it’s done. Hit the side menu, and pick Downloads. Tap on the video you want to save to your camera roll. Choose “Save to Camera Roll” and then “Save Video.” Go to the iDownloadblog to see screenshots of this process along with more details.
