Many know Hugh Laurie as Dr. Gregory House from the hit series, House, for which he received two Golden Globe Awards. These days, Laurie is gearing up for the release of his new Hulu show, Chance. But who’s the lucky lady in Laurie’s life? Who is he married to?
Read on to learn about Jo Green, Hugh Laurie’s wife.
1. They Married in 1989
Laurie married Jo Green on June 16, 1989. Together, the couple has three children: Charlie (b. 1988) Bill (b.1991), and Rebecca (b. 1992).
The family is notoriously private, and Laurie does his best to avoid the spotlight.
2. Laurie Says That His Time In Hollywood Put a Strain on His Marriage
While playing the role of Dr. House in America, Laurie spent nine months out of every year separated from his wife and family, who lived in North London. The separation was extremely difficult for Laurie, but both he and his wife decided that uprooting their children would be too difficult. Furthermore, he and Green were “very attached to the great education in the UK.”
When asked by The Daily Mail if he spent more time on set than at home, Laurie said, “I wouldn’t say that doing the series has made my marriage easier. Better? I don’t know about that either.”
3. Laurie Has Admitted to Having an Extramarital Affair
In a 2001 interview with the Evening Standard, Laurie discussed his struggle with depression, and how that affected his wife and children. He told the newspaper, “I don’t know enough about the illness to say whether it was clinical, but I was certainly more than feeling a bit sad. It went on for long periods of time and had all the other symptoms, like lethargy and not wanting to get out of bed in the morning.”
More than once, Laurie has described the depression as being crippling. “I can remember the moment when I realized I had a problem. I was doing this stock-car race for charity somewhere in the East End. But in the middle of the race, with cars exploding and turning over – life or death – it suddenly hit me that I was bored.”
Laurie admits that the depression may have somewhat contributed to his “brief extra-marital affair” with a film director, however, he did not want to discuss those details with the Evening Standard. “It possibly was connected. But I don’t remember.” When asked how he and Jo were able to get past that, Laurie said, “It’s terrific, and I’m very lucky. I’m so much happier now and more accepting of things.”
4. Jo Is a Theater Administrator
Little is known about Laurie’s wife of 27 years other than the fact that she is a theater administrator.
Laurie and Green have remained relatively under-the-radar, despite the fact that Laurie is so loved by his fellow actors. Stephen Fry, a great friend of Laurie, tells the Standard “He’s a remarkable man to know. I owe him everything. He’s the real thing. Gifted, phenomenally intelligent, and wise.”
5. Laurie’s Plans to Uproot His Family to LA Were Cancelled
In 2008, while filming House, Laurie decided to uproot his wife and kids to LA so they could be all be together. These plans were eventually cancelled “due to some unknown reasons,” writes Frost Snow.
In 2012, Laurie was able to move back to the UK, where he was reunited with his wife and kids.
