Anthony Pettis does not plan to wait around for UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and top contender Gray Maynard‘s third fight, which comes about following the split-draw in their rematch at UFC 125.

Pettis’ management told MMAWeekly.com earlier today that the layoff would simply be too long, and that the last WEC lightweight champion will fight again before meeting the winner of the third installment of the Edgar vs. Maynard trilogy.

The young lightweight sensation made waves in the WEC lightweight division with his flashy techniques and dominant performances. He battled to the top by defeating such fighters as Shane Roller, Alex Karalexis, and Danny Castillo. Then, at the promotions final event before completely merging into the UFC, Pettis defeated Ben Henderson to earn the lightweight title.

The WEC 53 victory was supposed to set Pettis up for a title unification bout between the winner of Edgar vs. Maynard, which headlined the UFC’s first event of 2011, “UFC 125: Resolution.” However, a split-draw left many doubts in terms of who the top lightweight in the promotion is, and, while he was originally given the title shot immediately following the main event last Saturday, Pettis learned later that evening that UFC president Dana White had opted for another rematch before the WEC champion would have his turn.
