Until the Criterion Collection finally gets its act in gear and releases the definitive Blu-ray release of this classic film, we’ll have to make do with the streaming version on Netflix. C.H.U.D. stands for Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers (but you knew that already), hideous flesh-eating mutants that are the unfortunate (and environmentally-unfriendly) result of radioactive toxic waste that’s been “stored” in the New York City sewers. There have been a lot of missing persons cases lately, and most of them are homeless people — hmm, could this somehow be connected to a recent conspiracy theory involving the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (which everyone knows is the most corrupt government organization on the planet)? Somehow, John Heard, Daniel Stern and Kim Greist star in this thing, but the classier-than-expected cast just makes C.H.U.D. even more awesome along with director Douglas Cheek’s expertly staged and imaginative attack scenes (our favorite of which involves a clogged shower drain). For those who have seen it, it’s just as magical as you remember it — and for those who haven’t, fix that, pronto. Followed by the direct-to-video C.H.U.D. II: Bud the C.H.U.D., which is almost just as special.
