As polarizing a horror film as you’re likely to ever come across, YellowBrickRoad follows a group of explorers who journey into the New Hampshire wilderness to investigate the disappearance of the residents of the small town of Friar who, in 1940, inexplicably just started heading north on an unmarked trail — some were found frozen to death, others mysteriously slaughtered and most were never found at all‚ except for one lone survivor who couldn’t stop covering his ears and mumbling, “Don’t you hear it?‚ Don’t you hear it?” There are some great ideas in YellowBrickRoad, as well as some rather ill-advised and (probably unintentionally) goofy twists and turns — ultimately, how you feel about this increasingly surrealistic descent into the unknown will probably be determined by how you take the seemingly completely batshit ending. For the record, YellowBrickRoad definitely rewards a second viewing, especially after you do some homework and see that the filmmakers may have based the whole thing on Dante’s Inferno‚ and realize that the very first scene in the records office holds more clues than you can possibly have hoped to catch the first time around. Whether you’re delighted or enraged by this tricksy little flick, you won’t soon forget it.
