Angela still throws a pretty wild party, even after all these years. This 2009 remake of the 1988 horror comedy changes the location from a funeral home to a New Orleans mansion, where Angela’s (Shannon Elizabeth) ultimate Halloween bash takes a sinister turn after the police shut the shenanigans down and a few party stragglers unwittingly unleash some demons looking to possess them and take over the earth. Unfortunately, this Night tries way too hard, creating a sense of embarrassing self-consciousness as it goes clumsily over-the-top with the sex, violence and gore (a lesbian seduction scene set to Type O Negative’s death metal hair dye anthem, “Black No. 1,” is especially eye-rolling); director Adam Gierasch also often mistakes edginess for tastelessness, with at least one too many uses of the word “pussy” in reference to a vagina and a bunch of gross-out gags that end up being more awkward than titillating (including a brief demon orgy and a scene featuring a drug dealer holding a meeting with a courier, seemingly completely oblivious to the fact that he’s also receiving oral sex at the same time — ha, ha). Still, it’s better to try too hard than not at all with these things — at least it’s got spirit, which is more than can be said for many B-movie horror films. The cast is fun, except for Edward Furlong, looking bloated and strung out as Monica Keena’s loser ex.
