Justise Winslow is following in the footsteps of his father. Rickie Winslow played professional basketball in the NBA as well as in Europe. He is also renowned for his days on the infamous Houston college basketball teams of the 1980’s. As Justise enters the NBA there is no doubt he is leaning on his father’s experiences to help make it as smooth a transition as possible. Here are some notable facts about Rickie Winslow:
1. Rickie Was Member of Phi Slamma Jamma
Rickie Winslow played for the University of Houston from 1983 to 1987. Part of this era was dubbed the “Phi Slamma Jamma” teams for their high flying dunks and exciting play. The teams also included Hakeem (then Akeem) Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler. The 1984 team made it to the national title game.

2. He Favors a 2 Year College Requirement

While his son only played one year of college at Duke, Rickie actually favors a two year commitment to playing college basketball rather than the current rule. The current rule requires players to be one year removed from high school. Had the two year rule been in place this year, Justise Winslow would have had to return to college for his sophomore season rather than declare for the NBA Draft. Rickie believes the additional year in college helps the college basketball game as well as gives the players another year to perfect their craft.

3. Rickie Was Also Drafted into the NBA
Winslow was drafted in 1987 by the Milwaukee Bucks with their second round pick. He also spent time with the Chicago Bulls. However, the majority of his career Rickie played in Europe before retiring in the year 2000.
4. He Has His Own Foundation
Rickie founded the Rowdy Foundation. According to its website, “The mission of ROWDY is to eradicate illiteracy among children and adults. We reach out to children, adolescents and adults through well coordinated intervention programs.” The organization focuses on the following three things: wellness, education and outreach.
5. Rickie Winslow Coached Justise at St. John’s High School
Rickie Winslow was the assistant coach at St. John’s High School while his son Justise Winslow played there. Rickie was the head coach of the junior varsity team as well. He offered the wealth of experience he had learned during his own playing days.
