ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson purchased a large insurance policy as he enters the final year of his deal. The specifics of the insurance policy have not been released yet.

The Seahawks and Wilson have been in contract negotiations as he enters the final year of his current contract. Wilson is drastically underpaid as he is still on his contract he signed when he was a third-round draft pick. According to Sportrac, Wilson is set to make $1.5 million this upcoming season.

This move could have been made to push the Seahawks towards signing him to a new deal. Otherwise, he is showing the team that he is prepared to play out the final year of his contract and enter free agency after the season. Something that is sure to make all the 12’s very uncomfortable.

Wilson’s agent, Mark Rodgers, works primarily with baseball players, including Cliff Lee and A.J. Burnett. There has been speculation this off-season that Rodgers is pushing for Wilson’s new deal to be fully guaranteed much like baseball deals are. This sort of deal would be unprecedented in the NFL.

Meanwhile, Russell Wilson has not made public comments regarding the specifics of the contract negotiations. He has used both his Twitter and Instagram accounts to reference his new relationship with singer Ciara. The two appeared together at a recent function at the White House.
