Just when you think the Deflategate saga is old news, fate hands sports fans an interesting scenario. If the New England Patriots defeat the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will hand the Patriots the Lombardi Trophy in Houston. To add a brief refresher, the controversy began in 2015 when the NFL found 11 footballs were under-inflated in the AFC Championship Game between the Colts and Patriots. The Patriots were fined $1 million and docked two draft picks (2016 first rounder and a 2017 fourth rounder). Most recently, after a lengthy appeals process, a four-game suspension for Tom Brady was upheld. The Patriots went 3-1 in Brady's absence with a combination of Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett playing quarterback. Week 5 began what many have called Brady's revenge tour. Brady threw for 3,554 passing yards, 28 touchdowns and two interceptions in the twelve games he played in 2016. Goodell has not been back to Foxborough since the Deflategate punishment was handed down, and Patriots fans would like nothing more than to see Goodell awkwardly hand New England the trophy.
