Is TheMobileBay.cc a Real Pirate Bay Site or a Copycat?

themobilebay.cc

Is TheMobileBay.cc the new home for The Pirate Bay’s mobile website? Is it the new domain now that TheMobileBay.org is shut down? Or is it a copycat or a spam site? At this time, it’s not known. Representatives have told us it is indeed a replacement for TheMobileBay.org, but the information hasn’t yet been confirmed.

A representative who said he was Fred, founder of The Pirate Bay, contacted reporters saying that TheMobileBay.cc was a new domain for TheMobileBay.org. And from the screenshot above, which was taken from the new TheMobileBay.cc, it does look very similar. However, when it comes to new torrent sites, caution is always prudent. In the torrent space, websites often pop up copycatting other sites after their domains are taken down. It’s not known at this time if this is one of them or if this is the real thing.

Here’s what we know so far.

The Site Said It Moved to the Cocos Islands

The press release (which MyTechBits reported about), stated that TheMobileBay.org was shut down due to copyright issues and the site has now moved to the Cocos Islands at the .cc domain. Specifically, it read: “Our domain was suspended on 28th Jan, 2016 by the copyright enforcement agencies, we are still trying our best to get the suspension revoked but the chances are slim. Henceforth, we moved to Cocos Islands with http://themobilebay.cc being the new domain name.”

However, you don’t actually have to move to the Cocos Islands to get a .cc domain. You can buy a .cc domain from anywhere, even from sites like GoDaddy. That doesn’t mean what they wrote wasn’t true, but it’s an interesting point.

ThePirateBay Founder’s Name is Misspelled in the Domain Registration

The WhoIs domain information for TheMobileBay.cc is also interesting. It lists the address of the registrant as being in Stockholm. In fact, it uses the same address that genuine The Pirate Bay domains use for the founder, Fredrik Neij. However, the domain registration misspells his name:

On the registration for TheMobileBay.cc, his name is spelled “Fredrick Neij,” when the founder’s name is actually spelled Fredrik Neij. However, the domain registration does use the same address that TheMobileBay.org used. Neij was just released from prison in June 2015.

ThePirateBay.se Does Not Redirect Mobile Users to TheMobileBay.cc, But a Representative Says They Are Working on That

As reported by TorrentFreak, when mobile users accessed ThePirateBay.se, they were automatically sent to TheMobileBay.org. That’s why mobile users are still getting error messages when trying to access the site from their phone. At this point, ThePirateBay.se is not yet redirecting to this new site on mobile phones. If it did, that would be a clear sign that TheMobileBay.cc is legitimate. If it’s redirecting on your phone, please leave a comment and let us know.

A representative from TheMobileBay.cc contacted us and said: “TheMobileBay uses the same database as our main website and that is it. As for the redirection, it is being worked upon. In fact, it is already working for some user agents and we are trying to implement it for all targeted devices.”

At this time, it cannot be confirmed whether or not TheMobileBay.cc is part of ThePirateBay family. We will update this story as we have more details. Remember, if you want to access movies or TV shows online, you can do so legally by buying a cable subscription or a subscription to sites like Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Hulu.
