A heavyweight clash between Shane Carwin and Roy Nelson is in the works for UFC 125 on January 1st.
Ariel Helwani reported the news via MMAFighting.com this morning. Sources close to the UFC have confirmed with Heavy.com that the bout is under consideration for the co-main event slot underneath the Frankie Edgar/Gray Maynard championship headliner, but neither fighter has been offered the bout at this time.
Carwin last appeared at UFC 116, losing via submission to champion Brock Lesnar in the second round. Carwin battered Lesnar and nearly finished the mammoth champion in the first round.
Nelson is coming off a loss to Junior dos Santos at UFC 117. “Big Country” underwent knee surgery following the bout, and it’s still unknown if Nelson will be able to compete by New Year’s Day. If he’s not ready in time, the fight will likely be pushed to UFC 127 on Super Bowl weekend.
Both Carwin and Nelson have engaged in a war of words via social networking service Twitter in recent months.
