Cut line for The Open Championship: +4
It was rainy. It was windy. It was a fairly typical day in Scotland.
After a sunny opening round of the 145th Open Championship at Royal Troon, Friday took an ugly turn. Rain was a constant throughout the day, but it didn’t seem to bother the players too much as a number of pros went under par for the round. At least those with the earlier tee times. The wind really began to pick up later in the day, though, causing scores to balloon.
Phil Mickelson followed up his record 63 with a 2-under 69 and was in the clubhouse at 10-under par with a one shot lead over Henrik Stenson (9-under), who shot a 6-under 65 Friday.
With Round 2 complete, the cut line was set at 4-over. At that number, a handful of big names won’t be sticking in Scotland for the weekend.
Ernie Els (+5), Paul Casey (+9), Danny Lee (+13), Jimmy Walker (+10) and Hideki Matsuyama (+8) are among those who couldn’t conquer Royal Troon and will miss the cut. Also heading home are former Open champions John Daly (+9), Louis Oosthuizen (+12) and Justin Leonard (+6).
The world’s No. 1-ranked player, Jason Day, shot 2-over 73 in the first round, but rebounded Friday to get inside the cut line. No. 2 Dustin Johnson was safely inside the cut line and third-ranked Jordan Spieth shot a 4-over 75 and is at +4 for the tournament, right near the projected cut line.
The tournament began with a 156-player field. The Open cut rules are similar to what a regular PGA Tour event would be, meaning the top 70 and ties advanced to the weekend. Unlike the PGA Tour, though, there is no 10-stroke rule. That means a player within 10 shots of the lead after the opening two rounds isn’t guaranteed to qualify for Saturday and Sunday play. Also, there is no secondary cut after Saturday’s third round as per usual on the Tour.
