The most lucrative weekend in horse racing, otherwise known as the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, will pay out a record $28 million in prize money over Friday and Saturday’s 13 Grade-1 races.
Of course, a significant chunk of that money is reserved for the main event, the Breeders’ Cup Classic, which boasts a staggering $6 million purse. A $1 million increase from what it was between 2006 and 2015, that is more than the purses of each of the three Triple Crown races–Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, Belmont Stakes–combined ($5 million)
Arrogate’s thrilling victory in the classic earned Bob Baffert’s camp $3.3 million, while the top eight finishers were all paid out.
