Thursday night the starters for next month’s NBA All-Star Game in New Orleans were announced, with there being one major surprise. Despite averaging a triple-double through 44 games, Oklahoma City guard Russell Westbrook was not named a starter for the Western Conference with Golden State’s Stephen Curry and Houston’s James Harden getting the nod. Given how well he’s played, there’s no doubt that Westbrook will be named an all-star when the coaches make their picks.

The reserves for the Eastern and Western Conference all-stars will be revealed Thursday, January 26 on TNT at 7:00 p.m. Eastern. Westbrook is one player who stands to receive the good news on that night, with others including Boston guard Isaiah Thomas and Toronto guard Kyle Lowry.

One question regarding the reserves: will Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid be selected? Embiid, playing his first NBA season after missing the 2014-15 and 2015-16 campaigns due to foot injuries, is averaging 19.9 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.4 blocks and 2.0 assists per game for the 76ers and is the clear favorite for the NBA Rookie of the Year award.
