The much anticipated meeting between NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and the New England Patriots finally happened.
Following the Patriots’ 21-point come-from-behind win, Goodell went down to the field to hand off the Lombardi Trophy to New England owner Robert Kraft and his team. As expected, Goodell was booed heavily from the crowd at NRG Stadium. He was booed so much so, that it was hard to hear him on the TV broadcast, and he was virtually inaudible inside of the venue.
Here’s another video from the sounds and the scene from inside.
Of course, the awkwardness was because of the tensions that had been brewing between the two parties because of “Deflategate,” which ended with Goodell and the NFL’s office suspending quarterback Tom Brady for the first four games of the 2016 NFL season.
Patriots fans have been vocal with their displeasure of Goodell and his office’s ruling and long-lasting investigation against the franchise. In addition to Brady’s suspension, New England lost first and fourth round draft picks and was fined $1 million, the largest in NFL history.
Prior to the Super Bowl, Goodell had avoided attending Patriots games in the playoffs, opting to travel to Atlanta in consecutive weeks to watch its NFC Divisional and Championship games.
