On The Today Show on Monday, John Cena and Nikki Bella spoke for the first time publicly about their engagement at WrestleMania.
During the interview, the soon-to-be-married couple addressed a few unanswered questions from last night. First, Nikki Bella said she had no idea John Cena was going to propose, but she said she was very happy with how he did it. She says she was not turned off by the fact that it was such a public spectacle, as she feels like the WWE is their home and so it was like they were getting engaged in front of their family.
Speaking of which, John Cena literally did get engaged in front of his family because his mother was at WrestleMania for the first time ever. She hates to travel, and Cena says that he actually didn’t know she was going to be there; he says that he looked out in the audience, saw his mom, and said, “holy s—.”
So when did John Cena know he was going to propose to Nikki Bella? He reiterated on Today the same story he told at WrestleMania: that he decided he was going to propose in January 2016, the month that Nikki Bella had neck surgery.
John Cena heavily implies in this interview that his whole stance on marriage has changed because of Nikki Bella. He had previously said that he didn’t want to get married because he didn’t want kids. Although he didn’t outright say it, it sure sounds based on this interview like he’s now open to having children.
When asked about when the wedding will be, Nikki Bella said that they don’t have a date yet but that she has been looking through her calendar trying to pick one. She did say that she doesn’t want a very long engagement, and she confirmed that the wedding will not take place in a wrestling ring.
John Cena and Nikki Bella will both now to take a hiatus from the WWE, although they are expected to appear on SmackDown Live on Tuesday.
