Preview

Outside of the Kentucky Derby, the two most lucrative races on the day will be the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic and the Churchill Downs Stakes, both of which feature a purse of $500,000.

The former, which goes right before the Derby and is considered the “co-main event,” should be a compelling race. Divisidero, who will be ridden by Julien Leparoux, looks to become just the third horse in history to win this race in back-to-back years, but he’ll have plenty of challengers in the stacked field, including last year’s second-place finisher, World Approval.

The third Grade-1 race on the card–behind the Derby and the Woodford Reserve–is the $300,000 Humana Distaff. That one will have a number of big names in the field, including Finest City, winner of last year’s Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, and Carina Mia, who took down the Grade-2 Eight Belles at Churchill Downs last year.

Other favorites to watch include three-time graded stakes winner Masochistic (Churchill Downs), three-time Grade-1 winner Miss Temple City (Churchill Distaff Turf Mile), La Coronel (American Turf) and Local Hero (Pat Day Mile).
