Strikeforce middleweight top contender Robbie Lawler re-signed with the promotion earlier today for a multi-year deal.
Strikeforce officials announced the news on Wednesday, December 30.
Lawler, a UFC and EliteXC veteran, has been hit and miss throughout his Strikeforce career, winning three of five. However, in his last bout, he viciously knocked out Matt Lindland in the opening frame to earn a title shot against 185 lb. champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza.
“Strikeforce has treated me good, and I am happy to re-sign with them,” Lawler stated in today’s official press release. “They have given me an opportunity to fight for the title and I’m looking forward to that and to fighting any and all of the top 185-pounders.”
Prior to his fight with Lindland, Lawler took on former UFC light heavyweight champion Renato Sobral in a catchweight bout, losing via unanimous decision. The loss was his second with the promotion, while the other came against current UFC welterweight top contender Jake Shields. His other win, like his victory over Lindland, was a brutal knockout against Melvin Manhoef at “Strikeforce: Miami”.
Now, Lawler is set to meet Souza at “Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg” on January 29 in San Jose, California. The main event of the evening will feature welterweight champion Nick Diaz against Evangelista Santos, while the co-main event will feature Lawler and Souza.
