The Bernabeu hosts the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup on Wednesday, but there’s one notable absence. Cristiano Ronaldo had his suspension appeal rejected on Wednesday, and will have to watch from the sidelines as Madrid defend their 3-1 aggregate lead.
Ronaldo disagreed with a call during Sunday’s first leg that led to his ejection, and made contact with referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea in the process. It wasn’t a violent gesture, but the red card paired with the contact will cause Ronaldo to miss the start of the Spanish league season.
Madrid have the lead heading into the second leg, but Barcelona has held the edge over the last few meetings. The Catalans were 3-2 victors at El Clasico Miami, and won the final meeting between the teams to end last season.
It’s early in the season, but both squads are missing key players. Ronaldo is the obvious absence, but Iniesta and Vermaelen are both out for Barcelona.
These teams last met in a Super Cup to start the 2012-13 season, and as usual, it was an intense affair. Barca led 3-2 after the first at Camp Nou, but Real Madrid won 2-1 at home and took the series on away goals.
