As PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds inches towards the 1.0 release on PC it is also coming to Xbox One as part of the Game Preview program that Microsoft offers.
This will mark the first time the wildly popular battle royale shooter will be available on a console, where it’ll also receive some stiff competition from Fortnite: Battle Royale, which arrived on console just before PUBG did.
In the days leading up to the launch, we’ve been given some information about things to look forward to in the game. One thing many players will have to grow accustomed to, especially if they are making the jump from PC to console, is the control scheme with a controller. The mouse and keyboard on PC make inventory management a breeze but there will be some changes made to the system to get it working on a controller.
Another change that will likely make a big difference coming from PC to console is the framerate. The Xbox One and Xbox One X versions of the game will both be targeting 30 FPS resulting in a similar performance across all three versions of Xbox One. The Xbox One X will likely feature sharper visuals but the experience should feel roughly the same on all three iterations.
Your basic controls such as shooting and running will remain like most other shooters but your drag and drop inventory system receives the biggest change. Instead of just bringing up the menu and dragging what you don’t want out, you’ll instead use RB and LB to move between the columns of gear to get to what you want. Here’s what Xbox Wire wrote about the inventory system:
Switching between columns in your inventory guide (RB/LB) will be a key component as you move through your equipment and supplies while in-game. Use the A button to pick up a weapon from the inventory UI, then select which highlighted slot you’d like to place it, then press A again. The key here is that pressing X picks up items into your bag like ammo and attachments, A swaps and equips items with your current loadout, and Y always drops the selected or highlighted item.
To easily strip all attachments from your weapons, simply highlight the weapon in your inventory and hold X. This will place all attachments back into your inventory bag. This keeps them available to place on your next weapon of choice. You can also hold Y to strip all the attachments to the ground if your bag is too full before grabbing your new weapon.
The Xbox Wire team also provided a series of screenshots to showcase the different control schemes in various parts of the game. These control schemes include basic controls, aiming, vehicles, swimming, map and inventory. There’s a lot to get used to so it might be worth taking a look at the screenshots before jumping into the action.
