Johnson welcomes Barao to the UFC this May
A second bantamweight bout has been added to UFC 130 today, as Demetrious Johnson welcomes Renan Barao to the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
The promotion announced the match up via its official website earlier on Saturday.
Johnson, who went 2-1 in the WEC before the promotion merged with the UFC, debuted at “UFC 126: Silva vs. Belfort” with a dominant unanimous decision victory over Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto. The victory was his ninth as a professional and he has only lost on one occasion, dropping a unanimous decision to Brad Pickett at WEC 48 in April of 2010.
While Johnson’s time in the WEC was successful, so was Barao, who was dominant in his two appearances, earning submission victories over Anthony Leone and Chris Cariaso. At 25-1 as a professional, the Brazilian is certainly one of the top prospects in the 135 lb. division.
The bantamweight tilt is set for UFC 130 on May 30 in Las Vegas, Nevada and will be a preliminary card contest, alongside a bout between the aforementioned Cariaso and Yamamoto, which was the other 135 lb. match up announced today. The event is headlined by a lightweight championship bout between champion Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard.
