Fernandes, Falciroli clash in Manila
DREAM bantamweight champion Bibiano Fernandes meets Gustavo Falciroli at One Fighting Championship’s upcoming event on August 31.
The promotion officially announced the contest at a press conference in the Philippines today.
“Bibiano is a great fighter,” Cui told Heavy.com earlier this week. “He has a huge fanbase here in Asia, which is why he really wanted to find his home with One FC; Because this is really where he built a big chunk of his career as an MMA fighter, and he’s excited to be showcasing himself here in front of an Asian audience.”
Originally, reports surfaced that Fernandes had signed on with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, but he confirmed those reports as false. Shortly after the rumors, he signed with One FC.
“I would like to make perfectly clear the news concerning my involvement with the UFC,” Fernandes wrote on his official Facebook page. “It was announced that I, Bibiano Fernandes, have been contracted to fight for the organization at UFC 149, which will take place in the city of Calgary on the 21’st of July. I would like to make it clear that I am not a UFC athlete, as I did not sign any contract with the UFC organization.”
Fernandes last competed at DREAM’s year-end show on December 31, 2011, defeating Antonio Banuelos via technical knockout to earn the bantamweight title.
Meanwhile, Falciroli last fought at One FC’s February event, earning a first round submission win. The Australian native is 12-3 as a professional and is the current CFC bantamweight champion.
“One FC: Pride of a Nation,” is set for the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Manila, Philippines on August 31.
