Jeanette Married Steve Belichick
Bill is the only son of Steve and Jeanette Belichick (maiden name Munn). The couple met in 1951 at Hiram College and they had Bill the following year.
Steve was a former college and NFL player who later became a coach, and is credited with introducing the game and coaching to his son.
Steve passed away 15 years ago at the age of 86. The couple had been married for 55 years when he died.
Jeanette was a language instructor and had an understanding of seven languages. While she didn’t work in the sport, she was lauded for her knowledge of the game, which is understandable considering her husband, son and grandsons were so enveloped in the game.
Bill has referenced his mother’s experience as a teacher as a major factor in his ability to lead and instruct. Here are a few of the reactions from members of the media who also offered a bit more insight into Bill’s relationship with his mother.
ESPN’s Ian O’Connor tweeted:
Bill Belichick credited his mom, a language teacher, for showing him how to teach. Bill’s dad Steve once said of Jeannette: “I don’t think there’s a woman in the country who knows more about football. She can tell u the 2nd string QB of the Rams & who coaches Texas-El Paso. RIP
NFL.com’s Albert Breer tweeted:
You always hear about Bill’s dad being an influence on him, since his dad was a football coach. What you heard less about him is the difference his mom, a teacher, made in him becoming who he is. RIP, and best to the family.
Belichick Didn’t Give Any Information on His Mom’s Death When He Spoke on Tuesday
Belichick met with the media via lve stream on Tuesday morning, but he did not make any references to his mother’s passing. In fact, he handled the news conference in a business-as-usual fashion, which is not a surprise considering his usual stoic demeanor.
There is no word yet on funeral services, or if Belichick will be absent from any games or team activities while he and the family handles arrangements.
