Update: check out our review for All Elite Wrestling Full Gear 2020 right here.
All Elite Wrestling’s Full Gear event is almost upon us.
And considering how eventful last year’s show was, expectations are running high for 2020’s installment of the signature AEW PPV. This year’s Full Gear is shaping up to be a must-see event based on the current happenings and going’s on in AEW. Darby Allin will get a chance to claim the TNT Championship, The Young Bucks will finally go head to head with FTR, Matt Hardy and Sammy Gueverra will finally settle their longstanding war, and Eddie Kingston will battle Jon Moxley for the AEW World Championship once again. Also, a new #1 contender to that aforementioned title will be decided. All in all, AEW Full Gear looks to change the foundation of the company as we know it.
Before AEW Full Gear 2020 gets here, let’s break down the entire match card and pick our predicted winners.
Serena Deeb (c) vs. Allysin Kay (NWA World Women’s Championship)
Predictions & Winner: Mere days after NWA women’s star Allysin Kay announced her departure from the promotion, she gets announced as the next challenger for Sareena Deeb’s World Women’s Championship. Something tells me this interpretational deal will lead to more appearances from contracted NWA talent in the near future. As for the match itself, I think it will be better than expected. Deeb has impressed in all of her Dynamite performances thus far and I’m sure Kay will perform at her best in front of a new audience. I’m giving Deeb the win here as her title run is just getting started.
Orange Cassidy vs. John Silver
Predictions & Winner: John Silver’s been getting a lot of traction lately. His hilarious antics on Being the Elite have garnered him some screen time on recent episodes of Dynamite. He stands out as one of the more entertaining members of The Dark Order, that’s for sure. And now he’s getting the chance to show out on PPV against AEW’s other hilarity inducing roster member, Orange Cassidy.
Even though they’re known for getting a good laugh out of me, they also keep me enthralled anytime they’re in the ring. And since they’re being paired against each other, I’m expecting some good quality here. Orange is a lot higher on the totem pole than John at the moment, which makes me think Mr. “Freshly Squeezed” will come out on top here.
Matt Hardy vs. Sammy Guevara (The Elite Deletion)
Predictions & Winner: I’m gonna keep it a stack with you, folks – I’m feeling super uneasy about this feud picking back up from where it left off last. Ever since Matt Hardy and Sammy Guevara have gone to war with each other, Matt’s been bloodied with an errant chair shot and he even banged his head against the concrete in an uncomfortable spot during AEW All Out 2020. I figured Tony Khan would get the hint and decide to keep these two apart from now on, but cooler heads haven’t prevailed in that case. Both Matt and Sammy still have plenty of leftover beef and are looking to settle it in the most definitive manner possible. Their next (and I sincerely hope, final) matchup will take place as “The Elite Deletion.”
Based on Matt’s previous marquee specialty matches, I get the feeling that this whole Elite Deletion deal will be a pre-taped affair. But this one won’t have any of the tomfooleries that were on display during Matt’s “Broken” run. Since both men hate each other’s guts, this match will most likely feature a whole lot of brawling and usage of outside hardware. Even though I wish Matt wouldn’t risk it all these days, I can still envision him pulling off a super crazy dive on Sammy to bring this match and feud to an end. I’m picking Matt as the ultimate victor here.
Hikaru Shida (c) vs. Nyla Rose (with Vickie Guerrero) (AEW Women’s World Championship)
Predictions & Winner: This women’s title match sure came out of left field, didn’t it? I figured Dr. Britt Baker was next up to challenge Hikaru Shida for her championship. But Nyla Rose is apparently the #1 contender and is finally getting her rematch since losing at Double or Nothing earlier this year. Speaking of that show, I really enjoyed the hardcore rules brawl they put on.
Even though this match is being contested under normal rules, I’m still looking forward to this second meeting between the two. I think there’s still some steam left in Hikaru as champ, so I see her getting another PPV victory over the “Native Beast.” If anyone’s going to take down the AEW Women’s Champ in the near future, it’s either going to be Dr. Britt or Thunder Rosa if she ends up signing with AEW full time.
Cody (c) (with Arn Anderson) vs. Darby Allin (AEW TNT Championship)
Predictions & Winner: Once again, the blonde-haired hero of AEW will lock horns with the company’s face painted daredevil. Each of their matches has been memorable thanks to Cody’s willingness to match Darby Allin’s risk-taking mindset and Darby’s ability to take a ton of damage from his stronger foe. Since returning to AEW, Cody retrieved the AEW TNT Championship after defeating Mr. Brodie Lee and fended off an always game Orange Cassidy. Darby managed to nab a big win over “Absolute” Ricky Starks and keep himself in the mix, which has kept him at a respectable level among AEW’s vast roster. Now both Cody and Darby are meeting each other in the ring once again. And this time, there’s championship gold on the line.
Even though Cody just got the TNT Championship back within his grasp, I’m sensing a shocking title taking place here. Cody has beaten Darby a few times already and now’s the perfect time for Darby to finally get the win her deserves over his most notable rival. Cody’s status within the company won’t take much of a hit even if he loses his newly one title just a few weeks after getting it back – dropping the belt to Darby is the best way to go in a bid to finally push him to a higher level. This match will be hotly contested and likely go more than 15-minutes, which is a premise I’m very much looking forward to. My money’s on Darby shocking the world and finally overcoming Cody. It’s the right thing to do and I’m hoping the powers that be at AEW realize that.
FTR (Cash Wheeler and Dax Harwood) (c) (with Tully Blanchard) vs. The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson) (AEW World Tag Team Championship; If The Young Bucks Lose, They Will Never Challenge for the AEW World Tag Team Championship Again and Tully Blanchard is Banned From Ringside)
Predictions & Winners: Cash Wheeler once tweeted out that The Revival would wrestle The Young Bucks someday and the world would rejoice. He made sure to tell his army of loyal followers to remember that prophetic tweet. I damn sure never let it leave my mind and am extremely happy with the fact that that tweet will come true at Full Gear 2020. Due to their victory during a Fatal Four-Way tag team affair on Dynamite, Matt and Nick Jackson finally earned themselves a shot at the AEW World Tag Team titles. And mere moments after they won the match, The Young Bucks got attacked by the reigning champs. FTR left Matt in a really bad state as they crushed a chair over his leg and assaulted his brother Nick. It’s clear that Cash and Dax Harwood’s painful message was sent in full.
I’m very much looking forward to watching this dream match unfold. The tension between both teams can be cut with a knife at this point. And the clash of styles between both teams presents an interesting dynamic for their title match. How will FTR’s old-school tactics fare against The Young Bucks’ flashy, daredevil approach? I can’t wait to see and find out. Since the stakes attached to this title match are lofty, I think both teams are going to go all out. And since FTR recently got their hands on the tag team championship, it’s much too soon for them to drop the straps. FTR will get the big win here thanks to some outside assistance from good old Tully Blanchard, which will shock us all and push The Young Bucks into the next phase of their career. This bout will surely be a great one, that’s for sure.
Chris Jericho vs. MJF (with Wardlow) (If MJF Wins, He is Allowed to Join The Inner Circle)
Predictions & Winner: MJF has aspirations of aligning himself with a strong stable these days. His loss to Jon Moxley at All Out made him sit back and rethink his approach to getting further ahead in the company. And he ultimately made the decision to make a play at joining Chris Jericho’s Inner Circle. Since making his intentions clear, MJF has gifted the group with custom jackets, butted heads with Sammy Guevara, engaged in an out of nowhere dance/singing number with “Le Champion,” and answered some hard-hitting questions at a Townhall meeting. Now Jericho has made it clear that he’ll let MJF join the group if he bests him in this first-time matchup between the two.
I like how this whole ordeal has been set up and I’m a fan of what MJF must do in order to stand by Jericho’s side. Proving one’s strength and cunningness to their veteran competition is a viable path towards earning their respect. Should MJF overcome The Inner Circle’s leader, Jericho will have no choice but to acknowledge his younger equal and bring him into the fold. But I think MJF won’t be able to get the job done here. The rest of The Inner Circle aren’t such big fans of MJF and I think they’ll play a part in stopping him from winning here. Ortiz hates MJF’s guts and he seems like the most likely group member to stop him from beating his stablemate. I predict a Jericho victory here that will push MJF to enact his revenge by putting together a stable of his own in the near future. This will be the opening salvo in Jericho and MJF’s ongoing feud, I presume.
Kenny Omega vs. “Hangman” Adam Page (AEW World Championship Eliminator Tournament Finals; Winner Receives a Future AEW World Championship Match)
Predictions & Winner: As soon as I saw the brackets for the AEW World Championship Eliminator Tournament, I knew who’d be making it to the Finals. Ever since losing the AEW World Tag Team Championship and going their separate ways, I had a feeling that Kenny Omega and Adam Page would be beefing with one another. While Kenny doesn’t seem to be too fond of the “Hangman” nowadays, Adam still harbors some love towards “The Cleaner.” That difference in feelings presents an interesting dynamic between the two that will present this match as a more storytelling oriented matchup. And now that Kenny is presenting himself as the top-tier singles superstar he should have always been, the potential for this bout being an excellent one is high.
This one should hopefully get 20 minutes or more to end this exciting tourney on a high note. Kenny will most likely wrestle at his best and take out all his frustrations on his former tag team partner that let him down at All Out 2020. Adam will definitely take the fight to his former championship running buddy as well, but I think he’ll hold back at certain points since he still cares about Kenny to a degree. This behavior will ultimately be Adam’s undoing and give Kenny a chance at being as ruthless as he’s always wanted to be. Kenny’s going to defeat Adam in the most vicious manner possible and go on to avenge his Full Gear 2019 loss to Jon Moxley in the coming months.
Jon Moxley (c) vs. Eddie Kingston (“I Quit” Match for the AEW World Championship)
Predictions & Winner: Eddie Kingston has been a constant highlight of AEW Dynamite/Dark ever since he showed up to take on Cody for the TNT Championship. The man has captivated new fans with his heartfelt promos, built a stable of four killers around him to do his bidding, and managed to work himself into a world title feud. The first time Eddie locked up with Jon Moxley for the AEW World Championship, Jon choked the rough and tough New Yorker out. Eddie’s made it clear that he never tapped out and has made it a mission of his to get another shot at Jon’s title once again. That wish has thankfully been granted and now Eddie will meet his former running mate Jon in an I Quit Match for the AEW World Championship.
I hope and pray this match gets plenty of time to meet the high expectations I have for it. Both men have it in them to go the distance in a hardcore brawl and wow the paying audience tuning in to see them. Both Jon and Eddie have plenty of submissions in the tuck, which we’ll see on display during this relaxed rules affair. Since Eddie succumbed to Jon’s Bulldog Choke the last time they met, I predict that Eddie will find a way to avoid it this time around. But eventually, Jon will pull out something completely unexpected and use it to put the final nail in Eddie’s coffin. This brand new submission will force Eddie to submit and keep the AEW World Championship on Jon for the foreseeable future.
