In classic “Notorious” fashion, UFC superstar Conor McGregor trolled his longtime foe, Nate Diaz, on Twitter and then deleted it. If there is one thing MMA fans can count on in this sport, it’s that McGregor and Diaz will continue to take aim at each other on social media.
In the latest episode of their nearly five-year-long rivalry, Notorious took to Twitter on Monday to “celebrate” Diaz’s victory over Gray Maynard. November 30 marked seven years since Diaz finished Maynard by first-round TKO in their lightweight bout at The Ultimate Fighter 18 Finale.
The fighters had competed twice before. They first met during The Ultimate Fighter 5 when they competed in an exhibition bout in 2007. Diaz defeated Maynard by second-round submission and went on to win the show. The two rematched three years later as full-fledged UFC fighters and Maynard defeated Diaz by split decision. Diaz settled the score three years after that, making short work of his rival.
“Congrats Nathan Diaz celebrating the anniversary of his fight with Gray Maynard. Womp womp day! Happy womp womp day brother! Stellar stuff!” McGregor tweeted.
The Irishman then deleted the tweet shortly after. See a screenshot below:

McGregor & Diaz Are 1-1 Against Each Other, Trilogy Match Could Settle Rivalry
The rivalry between McGregor and Diaz seemingly won’t be settled until the two meet inside the Octagon for the third time and even then, it may never be squashed. Diaz and McGregor fought for the first time at UFC 196 in March 2016 after Notorious’ original opponent, then-lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos, pulled out due to injury.
Diaz stepped in on short notice and the two fighters met at welterweight, two divisions above featherweight, the weight class McGregor was ruling at the time. It was an electric contest and Diaz pulled out the upset, submitting Notorious in the second round.
Undeterred, McGregor rematched Diaz months later in August at UFC 202, once again at welterweight. The fight went all five rounds and the Irishman won the bout by majority decision.
McGregor Already Has a Busy 2021, Unclear If the Potential Fight Will Happen Anytime Soon
Over four years later, the two haven’t been booked for a trilogy fight and McGregor seemingly already has a packed 2021. He is scheduled to take on No. 2 ranked lightweight Dustin Poirier at UFC 257 on January 23. Notorious has also expressed interest in boxing Manny Pacquiao later next year, as well.
Diaz hasn’t fought since UFC 244 in November 2019. He took on Jorge Masvidal for the “BMF” title and lost by doctor’s stoppage. He has expressed interest in rematching “Gamebred,” however it’s unclear if that bout will happen anytime soon as Masvidal has been linked to No. 1 ranked welterweight Colby Covington for a potential fight.
