Chargers vs Rams Preview

The Chargers and Rams both have stellar starters at quarterback in Justin Herbert and Matthew Stafford, but don’t expect either quarterback on Saturday as their teams square off for a preseason tilt on Saturday.

The Rams traded for Stafford this offseason, opting for him rather than Jared Goff, who is now in Detroit. Stafford, 33, is one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in the league when it comes to his gaudy career numbers but he won’t be on the field for the preseason. Rams head coach Sean McVay made no secret of that.

“There is zero chance you will ever see Matthew Stafford take a snap in the preseason for the Rams as long as I’m the coach. That will never happen,” McVay told the Doug Gottlieb Show. “He is not going to play. That’s why it’s important for us to try to get competitive ‘opps’ against some of these other teams in practice settings. Practicing against the Cowboys this Saturday. Get the Raiders twice. So we’re always looking for those things. Until you tell me that if a guy gets hurt in the preseason that we’ll get those games back or they’ll add them on the schedule afterwards as, ‘Oh yeah, you get two games because you lost those guys in the preseason,’ it’s hard for me to make sense of it.”

While some key players won’t be on the field, the Rams will test certain players in the preseason, specifically at running back, where they have to fill in for the absence of Cam Akers. Darrell Henderson Jr., Xavier Jones and Jake Funk will be battling for reps.

“He’s got the ability, there’s no doubt about it,” McVay said of Henderson. “It’s really just kind of figuring out what’s going to be the best, I don’t want to say pitch count, but the best way to utilize him and really have the big picture in mind.”

Like many of the Rams starters, Henderson is not expected to play in the preseason at all.

With just three preseason games, the routine is a little different for teams around the league. The Chargers have taken on a similar approach to the Rams, with starting QB Herbert and safety Derwin James expected to sit out.

“Our practices are going to be a lot more like games than these preseason games,” Chargers head coach Brandon Staley said. “The environments that we create on our practice fields is where the real action is in the preseason for guys like him.

“I’ve been so excited to see him compete against all of the special players that we have. We feel like that’s the right environment for him to get ready for the season.”
