According to TNW, Microsoft announced on Tuesday, January 8, it will be starting its migration process by switching 100 million-plus of its messenger users to Skype on March 15, 2013. Microsoft made the original announcement about the migration process back in November.

Tony Bates, Skype CEO, says:

On 15th March 2013 we are retiring the existing Messenger service globally (except for mainland China where Messenger will continue to be available) and bringing the great features of Messenger and Skype together.

Microsoft continues to encourage its users to “update to Skype.” Microsoft users can sign into Skype using their Microsoft account login and password. As soon as you login to Skype, all messenger contacts will be updated.
