Browns vs Panthers Preview
Well, that happened fast.
The Cleveland Browns traded quarterback Baker Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers this summer after the Browns acquired star quarterback Deshaun Watson. Now, the Browns will face Mayfield and the Panthers in Week 1 on the NFL season on Sunday.
“It’s a great storyline,” Mayfield said via ESPN’s David Newton and Jake Trotter. “Obviously, there’s history involved.”
Cleveland drafted Mayfield as the No. 1 pick in 2018, and Mayfield achieved relatively significant success with the Browns. He led the Browns to a winning season in 2020 and the franchise’s first playoff win since 1994. It wasn’t enough as Mayfield fell out of favor in 2021 amid a shoulder injury.
Mayfield arrived in Carolina with significant competition to beat out incumbent starting quarterback Sam Darnold. Mayfield won the job and looks to lead the Panthers to the franchise’s first winning season since the Cam Newton era.
“Any time you’re playing guys you know, it makes it just more interesting, more fun,” Mayfield said via ESPN. “You get to smack talk with your buddies that you’ve been with for a little bit. You know how to poke and prod and get the best out of them.
“I’m looking forward to the opportunity,” he added.
Cleveland, meanwhile, has an 11-game wait for Watson due to his suspension over NFL Personnel Conduct Policy violations. Backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett takes the reins for the Browns in the opener.
“I just have to be myself,” Brissett said via the Akron Beacon Journal’s Chris Easterling. “I don’t really kinda try and do anything more or less. More so, I just try and be myself.”
Brissett has quality skill player around him in new star receiver Amari Cooper, who joined the team this year after playing for the Dallas Cowboys last season. The Browns also have running back Nick Chubb, who can shoulder the rushing load as needed.
Mayfield has his share of strong skill players around him — starting with versatile running back Christian McCaffrey.
